Sorry for the silence but we’ve been busy working on the programme for KMUK 2011 and what a programme it is!

This year the theme of the event is all about KM as supporting effective business decisions and we’re delighted to have award-winning Dave Snowden giving the opening keynote along this theme, and award-winning Nick Davies, explaining the personal, influencing skills that KM Heads need to develop in order to secure a more strategic role in their businesses (preferably on the Board!). Dave and Nick’s talks will be well complemented by an address from Nick Milton of Knoco on KM as a logical outcome of business strategy.

But it doesn’t end there! Staying on the KM for business decision-making and financial benefits theme, confectionery giant Mars will give a case-study on how they have measured a $1 billion bottom line value to their business from their KM approach. And there will be further case studies on KM, business strategy and the delivery of results from Sellafield Ltd, Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust, Novartis, Syngenta and Thomson Reuters.

Another big theme for 2011 will be methods for effective organisational learning and, to this end, Chris Collison (co-author of Learning To Fly) will present some stories from his forthcoming book featuring the Olympic Games London 2012, Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Ferrari Formula One Team, the Red Arrows and University College London Hospital. We’ll also have Ditte Kolbaek flying in from Denmark, in advance of the publication of her new book, to give a case-study on using after action reviews. This will be followed by an after action review of KMUK 2011 itself, led by Ron Donaldson and designed to enhance participants’ learning.

The KMUK 2011 awards are back by popular demand and, this year, a highlight for delegates will be the opportunity to enjoy a glass of wine, some nibbles and a great conversation, after the prestigious awards ceremony, during one of David Gurteen’s ever popular interactive knowledge cafes. This one has been built into the programme, will last 70 minutes and is focused on why knowledge management has not lived up to expectations over the past 15 years and what do we need to do to change this over the next 15 years… This is just one of the ways in which we are seeking to maximise the opportunity for participants to make new social and business connections at KMUK 2011.

For details of all this and many more exciting new speakers and topics and to register for your place, please see the full programme on our event website at www.km-uk.com. You can get 20% off the price if you book early, by 8th April, or 10% if you have booked by 20th May.

KMUK2011 is a Twitter friendly conference and we are using the hashtag #kmuk11 this year. You can follow us at @ArkKMUK www.twitter.com/arkkmuk

And, don’t forget, if you’d like to submit an entry to the KMUK 2011 Awards, please email me (Leah Darbyshire) on ldarbyshire@ark-group.com to receive guidance on the entry criteria in good time to make the entry deadline of Friday 13th May 2011.

That’s all for now. We’ll be back with more news and updates. In the meantime, we hope to welcome you in person to KMUK2011 at De Vere Canary Wharf on Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd June!

Before I go on….a big THANK YOU!!! to all of our speakers, chairs, panellists, sponsors, award winners, award nominees, tweeters, bloggers, photographers and participants at KMUK2010 on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th June at De Vere Canary Wharf. All of you made the event as successful as it was.

I would write up the event here but I know that full write-ups will soon appear in both Inside Knowledge and Library & Information Update magazines, so, instead, I will leave you with a list of takeaways from the event, as offered by participants during the final session on the second day during one of the floor discussions.

Where a take-away was mentioned twice, these have been aggregated into one.

If you were at the event and I have missed any of the takeaways off, please let me know!

We will announce dates for KMUK 2011 soon…watch this space!

1) Role of leadership

2) Social media – and its impact on KM, how young people are using the technology and understand its nuances

3) Start small, with small-scale projects

4) Pick out the cash, link to cash benefits

5) Be more strategic, examine risks to the organisation

6) Look at internal crowdsourcing with customers and suppliers

7) KM is/needs to redefine itself

8) Current economy means (hopefully?) loss of control by IT – opportunity to exploit informal tools which make life easier

9) Expect anomalies (Dave Snowden’s talk)

10) Understand 2.0 People

11) Align KM with the organisational strategy and ROI

12) Use narrative to capture learning

13) Importance of the trivial for business relationships

14) Sense-making for business

15) Feel sad at people not talking, duplication of work, would have liked talk from a librarian

16) We’re all struggling with the same stuff

17) Ground things in reality

18) Storytelling

19) It’s about what people already do

20) Learn from mistakes

21) Engage with people

22) No hard numbers achieved but realise that you need all elements of the people, process, technology triangle

23) KM is changing in a rapidly changing world

24) KM needs to change and become more specific to organisational issues

…there will still be a couple of things to look forward to! Specifically Ark will be hosting two KM/social media related masterclasses in July in London.

The first masterclass, led by Ron Young, who has been a member of the UK Parliamentary Information Technology Committe since 1985, will expand on a theme developed at KMUK to look at the four dimensions of KM, not just personal KM but also team KM, organisational KM and inter-organisational KM. Ron will show you how to ensure that all 4 layers of KM are in sync to ensure that your programme succeeds. This masterclass takes place on Tuesday 13th July.

http://www.ark-group.com/mp_introduction.asp?ac=924&nc=1&fc=167

The second masterclass will expand on the social media theme at KMUK 2010 and will act as “An HR Guide to Social Media”. The issues around social media and how it relates with HR policy are complicated, and in many companies, policy and management lags behind technology growth and user uptake. At this class, hosted by Kathryn Corrick & Steve Bridger, participants will gain a clearer understanding of all the HR implications relating to social media and will leave the event able to write their own social media policy. This class takes place on Thursday 29th July.

To attend either masterclass, please visit the Ark Group website at www.ark-group.com.

…and we’ve changed a whole lot more than that.

We’re delighted to announce the agenda for the all-new KMUK 2010 event, which takes place on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th June at De Vere Canary Wharf in London.

There is no doubt that the increasingly widespread use and availability of social media technology has been responsible for a renewed interest in knowledge sharing of late and a resurgence in the KM discipline as a whole.

Building on the reputation of KCUK as the place for knowledge and information practitioners to meet each year, we’ve listened to your feedback and researched new trends in social media as well as advanced KM thinking and practice to bring you KMUK2010. KMUK 2010 is a place for you to connect, listen, learn, contribute, share, exchange, discuss, thrash out ideas and be challenged, so that you return to the office full of ideas for improving the way you share and manage knowledge at an organisational, team and personal level.

Here’s the full agenda: www.kmuk2010.co.uk

And here’s what is new:

KMUK 2010 Awards ceremony – celebrating success in KM

Business-focused practitioner case-studies from both blue chip and government organisations

Virtual social media workshop – with video, blogging, tweeting etc

Interactive format with maximum group and floor discussion

KM gurus speak alongside leading thinkers in social media

Networking skills session – to help you make social and business connections at the event

Ice-breaker and networking exercises as part of the programme

Harnessing web 2.0 skills for off-line collaboration - what do you do when there isn’t any social media?

Personal knowledge management skills
